Places To Go, People to See, Things to Do

January and February are full of excitement. With season in full swing, the calendar is packed with interesting events to attend. Here’s a look at what I think are the best bets in Sarasota for the weeks ahead:

A great foodie opportunity coming up is the Taste of St. Armands. The event showcases restaurants on the Circle that serve seafood, Italian, Cuban, Floribian and more. This year, over 19 restaurants are included in the festival plus wineries and microbreweries. So head to the circle on January 20 for a day of food and fun!

There’s so much to do at Forks & Corks, a Sarasota food and wine festival that brings together winemakers and restaurants. A group of more than 50 restaurants owned locally – the Sarasota-Manatee Originals – headline this multi-day event from January 26 to 28. Go to a seminar to improve your wine education or one of the many events at restaurants that include wine paired with chef creations.

Sarasota’s circus heritage runs deep. Support an organization that puts on spectacular circus performances and helps preserve the circus arts by attending The Circus Arts Conservatory’s Winter Wonderland. This gala on January 27 will have you enjoying the evening under the big top!

February is also a time to delve back into Sarasota’s award-winning theater scene. First on the list – lose yourself in an opera at the Sarasota Opera. Its performance of Manon Lescaut by Giacomo Puccini runs from February 10 to March 23 and involves jewels, parties and stunning vocals.

I’ve been waiting for the Andy Warhol exhibit to open at Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, and it’s almost here! Warhol: Flowers in the Factory starts February 11 and runs through June 30. It explores Warhol’s work with flowers and uses his creations as inspiration for living art with bromeliads, ferns, orchids and other flowers. The exhibit also includes four silkscreens and two prints of Warhol’s featuring flowers.

A unique luncheon twist comes in the form of SPARCCle on the Runway: Fashion Police, a benefit for the nonprofit Safe Place and Rape Crisis Center. On February 15, watch a fashion show at the Ritz-Carlton, Sarasota featuring clothing from the SPARCC Treasure Chest while listening to witty banter in the form of the always-opinionated television show “Fashion Police.”

January and February are going to be busy months. I can’t wait to see you at some of these special Sarasota events!
