Sarasota’s Summer Culture and Cuisine

Once our seasonal residents depart for the summer, Sarasota leans into a more casual vibe. Summer is the perfect opportunity to enjoy what our community has to offer at a slightly slower pace. From culture to cuisine, there’s certainly something for you to enjoy. The Van Wezel’s Friday Fest is a fun and free outdoor concert series. Bring your chairs to the Bayfront to sit back and enjoy the music on the Van Wezel’s Bayside Lawn. From 5 to 9 p.m., listen to tunes and dine on delicious food truck fare. On July 19, Rebel Heart will perform at Friday Fest. The five-piece band will play country hits along with pop, rock, dance and blues songs. Then, on August 16, the eight-piece band Reverend Barry & The Funk will play original songs and covers of funk and soul music. (Be sure to wear your dancing shoes!)

When the rain keeps coming down and the temperature keeps going up, the ideal place to spend a summer day is The Ringling museum. Mondays are free at the museum, so if you can, take advantage of the offer and explore the museum’s many interesting exhibits that day. A new special exhibition called The Fabric of India just opened, and you won’t want to miss it. It’s running through October 13, and it reveals 140 examples of fabric from the Victoria and Albert Museum in London and private collections.

Also on the grounds of The Ringling this summer is the Summer Circus Spectacular . This is your chance to visit the Historic Asolo Theater and take in a showcase of circus artists from around the world. The Circus Arts Conservatory and The Ringling are partnering on these family-friendly performances that run through August 3.

Summer is a great time to head back to your favorite restaurants in Sarasota or try a new one. You’ll have no trouble parking, a shorter wait than you would during season and more time to enjoy wining and dining. Ophelia’s on the Bay on Siesta Key has extended its Savor Sarasota deals through the summer. Its menu for Savor Sarasota is extensive and includes eggplant crepes, lobster bisque, mahi-mahi, tenderloin of pork, key lime pie and chocolate truffle tortes. Need I say more?

If you have children or grandchildren in tow, they are sure to enjoy the   Kid’s Summer Beach Runs at Siesta Beach . These one-mile fun runs are held every Tuesday through July 30. Registration starts at 5:30 p.m. and races start at 6:30 p.m. Enjoy the sand, the surf and join the kids in getting some good exercise.

Another great summer event for little ones is Selby Gardens’ Splashin’ Saturdays . On Saturdays through July 27, toddlers to 10-years-olds can enjoy water-themed activities at the gardens, from water slides to games. Adults will be treated to cool shade under the banyan trees and balmy Bay breezes.

From music to museums, circus performers to coastal cuisine, the beach to the bay, Sarasota certainly has a lot to offer this time of year. Don’t you agree?
