So Much Sarasota December Entertainment
Enjoy the Entertainment of the Season in Sarasota
The holidays are a great time to take in a performance with friends and family. Sarasota is never at a loss for interesting shows to see, and we’ve got some great ones coming up in December. Here are my top picks – hope to see you in the audience!
The Van Wezel is knocking it out of the park this month with some big star power. On Dec. 3, Grammy winner Leann Rimes makes her debut at the theater. Her “Today is Christmas Tour” is sure to put you in a festive mood!
Fans of the quartet 98° get to enjoy its premiere at Van Wezel this year, too. On Dec. 11, hear Nick Lachey, Drew Lachey, Jeff Timmons and Justin Jeffre put on their “98° at Christmas” tour.
There’s nothing like the Nutcracker during the holidays. The Sarasota Ballet will put on its uniquely Sarasota twist on the classic with “John Ringling’s Circus Nutcracker” at Van Wezel on Dec. 15 and 16.
Rounding out a spectacular December at Van Wezel is “Cirque Dreams Holidaze” on Dec. 21. This national tour combines the circus, a Broadway musical and a family show into one holiday-themed performance with 20 acts and 300 costumes.
There’s lots of buzz around town about Asolo Repertory Theatre’s “Evita,” which is running in December. The musical about Eva Perón includes a score inspired by Latin, pop and jazz music and hits such as “Don’t Cry For Me Argentina.”
For other takes on the Nutcracker, there are a couple more options in town. The School of Russian Ballet will present the Nutcracker at the Sarasota Opera on Dec. 10, and The Diane Partington Studio of Classical Ballet will present its version at the opera on Dec. 17. With lots of Nutcrackers to choose from, you won’t want to miss incorporating the classic into your holiday traditions!
Florida Studio Theatre has some exciting shows playing during December as well. “Mack the Knife: The Bobby Darin Songbook” is part of the theater’s winter cabaret collection, as is “Blue Suede Shoes,” with rock n’ roll hits from the 1950s. FST is also presenting the musical “Once,” a show about a Dublin street musician and the young woman he meets, sure to be a powerful performance.
The popular Ringling by the Bay event on the campus of The Ringling museum is back with Big Night Out, a Latin funk and Motown dance band that’s performing on Dec. 18. Sit near the water, enjoy the sounds of the band and you might even be inspired to get up and dance!
There’s so much to do in Sarasota this December – you may run out of days to do it all! See you out there, enjoying all of the entertainment of the season!
